Harry Brook Banned from IPL for 2 Years After Late Withdrawal

The BCCI and IPL’s new rule on last-minute withdrawals has led to its first major case—England’s Harry Brook. Reports suggest that Brook has been banned from the IPL for two years after pulling out of this year’s tournament at the last moment. An official notice has been sent to both Brook and the ECB stating that he cannot participate in the IPL auction until 2028.
This rule applies to all players who registered for the auction. Brook was set to play for Delhi Capitals but withdrew just days before the tournament began. This is the second year in a row he has opted out—last season, he skipped the IPL to spend time with family after his grandmother’s passing.
The IPL introduced this rule to prevent overseas players from backing out at the last minute. Teams were informed before the auction that any player who withdrew after being selected would face a two-year ban unless it were due to injury.
Brook’s decision reflects a growing trend of England players skipping the IPL. In a social media post, he expressed disappointment about missing the tournament but stated that his focus is on international cricket. Many believe he is preparing for a bigger role, with rumors suggesting he could be England’s next white-ball captain.
The IPL 2025 season begins on March 22, with Kolkata Knight Riders facing RCB at Eden Gardens.
