Relief in Sugar Prices During Ramadan, Confirmed By PSMA

The Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) Punjab Zone has informed us that the price of sugar during the blessed month of Ramadan will be announced on government terms at PKR 130 per kg. People of Punjab will be able to buy sugar at this rate at the designated sale points.

Shahid Raghubir, spokesman of the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association, cited that sugar prices are decided by the demand and supply. Nevertheless, market participants, are rife with false rumors that the association arbitrarily varies the price. The government should take action against such individuals.

In contrast with other countries, the sugar price in Pakistan remains at a lower level despite higher taxes and low productivity. This year sugarcane prices also increased to a large extent. This year’s sugar cane was bought for 600 rupees per maund, as opposed to 400 rupees per maund last year. Although the association has endured inflation, adverse economic conditions, and increasing sugarcane prices, the association has been able to maintain sugar prices at a constricted level.
