Willing To Launch PayPal In Pakistan, Said By SBP

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoIT&T) is actively engaging with PayPal to explore possibilities for its entry into the Pakistani market. This was confirmed by Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb in a written response to the National Assembly.

According to the minister, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has expressed its readiness to support PayPal in alignment with ongoing discussions led by MoIT&T. He also clarified that Pakistan has no legal barriers preventing the operations of international payment gateways, including PayPal, as long as they comply with the country’s Electronic Money Institution (EMI) and Foreign Exchange regulations.

Previously, the Minister of State for IT and Telecom acknowledged the challenges in bringing PayPal to Pakistan. She emphasized that while discussions are ongoing, the final decision ultimately depends on the company itself. She also pointed out that private firms operate based on their business strategies, and the government can only assist in facilitating the process but cannot force PayPal to enter the market.

For several years, Pakistan has been in talks with PayPal, aiming to integrate the platform into its expanding digital economy. However, despite multiple discussions, the company has not yet launched direct operations in the country.
